What was your first bike?
A rusty old little number fished out of a stagnant pond. It had solid rubber tyres and one pedal - but when you're a kid, you improvise! My first 'real' bike was a Releigh 'something' (but they were all Raleighs back then), a silver racer which was great. Faster than a Chopper, but not quite as cool.
How do you know Dan?
Dan's a work colleague at Sheffield Hallam.
Before you started training, when was the last time you cycled?
I cycle to and from work 2 or 3 times a week (around 4 miles each way) for the past couple of years - but that's totally different to 5 days of pretty severe, bum numbing cycling. A year ago several SHU staff took part in another challenge in the Lake District amongst other things cycling for 50 miles, some of it over pretty tough terrain and that was hard enough.
Why have you decided to do this challenge?
Dan said I had to…….. only kidding!
I've always tried to keep myself generally fit, mostly by running, but a knee operation (pure vanity reasons it turns out!) 6 months ago scuppered that (and still has to some extent), coupled with a glass back I was getting sloppy and I started getting lazy. Cycling isn't as bad on the joints and when Dan mentioned this challenge it struck a chord. What Dan (and his family), have been through with such determination and positiveness has been pure inspiration and joining a team to raise not only money but awareness of cancer and neurocare charities - well, it was a no brainer as they say.
What are you most looking forward to?
Apart from seeing my family when it's all over, all the downhill stretches and who knows, maybe a quick half at the Kirkstone Pass Inn as we go over the top!
What are you most worried about?
Knees and back! And as long as the team don't forget 'you're only as quick as you're slowest man or woman' things will be fine.
What do you want to achieve from this experience?
Thighs like Chris Hoy? Raising as much money as possible. The Craic as they say in Ireland.
How are you preparing for the challenge?
Apart from the little trips to and from work, I managed an 18 miler last weekend. Sorted! The coming weekends will see some early starts - the Peak District is a great place to train.
Tell us something interesting about yourself?
I live with Diana Ross!
Who do you most hope to be mistaken for whilst cycling?
I would say Chris Boardman but it'll be more like Stan Boardman.
