What was your first bike?
A small blue one that I was told I couldn’t go ‘scrambling‘ on in the nearby quarry. This was the same bike that played a part in me getting grounded for a week when I fell off and scratched it after going scrambling on it in the nearby quarry!!
How do you know Dan?
Through work related meetings that led to work related socialising and then wider ranging socialising ever since.
Before you started training, when was the last time you cycled?
After the quarry I started cycling again last summer in prepration for a charity bike ride.
Why have you decided to do this challenge?
Because Dan asked me, because it's for Dan's charity and because without the help of the people and places we are raising for he wouldn’t be able to ask the question never mind do the ride. I also remember sitting with Dan at a conference when first fearing his illness but then also attending the charity dinner at the testimonial rugby match after his revovery and feeling immensly privileged to be there and to know him.
What are you most looking forward to?
Finishing and having a good laugh in the process.
What are you most worried about?
Not finishing, lots of hills and the damage a small saddle can do to a big backside!
What do you want to achieve from this experience?
I want to raise as much as possibe for the charity and maybe lose some weight the process!
How are you preparing for the challenge?
Trying to get out on the bike as often as possible and eating lots of jelly babies.
Tell us something interesting about yourself?
I cycled from Edinburgh to London last year and vowed never to do anything like it again and the cylometer app on my phone reckons my fastest speed Ive clocked in training has been 119.3 km/h (something I doubt very much as otherwise I can look forward to completing the ride in a few hours)
Who do you most hope to be mistaken for whilst cycling?
Chris Boardman
